Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has hinted at forthcoming measures related to the care and number of migrants to be assisted in the city. Johnston mentioned they are considering two criteria to determine the measures. The first involves reducing the total number of services provided to newcomers and decreasing the total number of migrants that can be assisted. In this regard, Denver seeks to find a way to manage the costs of these services.

The second approach described by Johnston involves fostering collaboration between city agencies and departments to cover the current gap in the city’s funds. Johnston emphasized that they must make difficult decisions but aim to minimize the impact on the provision of services that the city offers to its residents. The mayor reiterated that they remain focused on prioritizing the needs of Denver residents.

Thankful to Colorado, let down by the federal government

Johnston also expressed gratitude to the state for its support thus far and mentioned that they continue to work in collaboration with Governor Polis and his team. Although he highlighted the lack of federal resources as a surprise, he emphasized the state’s commitment to provide assistance. Johnston also mentioned the possibility of declaring a state of emergency, although he noted that this would not necessarily activate more direct financial resources, but they will explore other ways to obtain support from the state in this situation.
