On February 26th, the Aurora City Council will not discuss the proposal aimed at limiting immigrants circulation and services provided to them in the largest city in the eastern Denver metropolitan area.
This news was indirectly communicated by Mayor Coffman, whom we requested a reaction to this possibility of an anti-immigrant resolution in Aurora. Knowing this decision allows us to identify two interpretations.
The first reading suggests that Councilwoman Danielle Jurinski and her colleagues realized the potential problems that could arise from advancing this resolution and the possible regrettable consequences for the entire community.
In this scenario, it would be a victory for the Hispanic community. The decision to postpone the discussion could represent a pause to reflect on the real impact of such a measure. And it opens the possibility of starting conversations with community leaders.
On the other hand, the postponement may be a tactical retreat by Councilwoman Jurinski and her team. It could be interpreted as a strategy to cushion the blow received in the session of the Municipal Council’s Intergovernmental Relations Committee.
In the committee session, it was evident that the resolution would be difficult to enforce. The councilwoman was perplexed to discover that even Uber drivers could not be fined for transporting undocumented individuals to Aurora, a measure she had contemplated.
In this case, while it is not a definitive victory for the Hispanic community, it represents an opportunity to stay alert and continue closely monitoring the situation’s development. We will delve deeper into this case and analyze the possible outcomes of this decision.
