Every pregnancy is unique and no one can possibly know another person’s circumstances. That’s why decisions around pregnancy are best made by a woman and her family, in consultation with her doctors and in accordance with her faith, beliefs, and spirituality — not by politicians.
Proposition 115 bans abortion later in pregnancy, with no exceptions for health or individual circumstances. The proponents of this initiative have been clear — they want to force a woman to continue a pregnancy even in cases of rape, incest, risks to her health, or a lethal fetal diagnosis.
Abortion later in pregnancy only represents about one percent of all abortion care, but is essential medical care for someone who is diagnosed with serious health complications or receives a fetal diagnosis later in her pregnancy. In some cases, like when a woman is a survivor of rape or incest, or is very young, Complications like these delay health care decision-making.
Proposition 115 makes it a crime for doctors who perform abortion care after 22 weeks of pregnancy, including fines and suspension of their licenses. This will prevent doctors from providing the best possible care to their patients.
This intentionally confusing initiative is being pushed by many of the same politicians and groups who have repeatedly tried to ban abortion outright in Colorado every year for the last decade. Restrictions on access to care will only further harm Black, Indigenous, Latino, and Coloradans of color, who are already adversely impacted by abortion bans.
Proposition 115 is a one-size-fits-all ban that ignores the uniqueness of each pregnancy and allows politics to dictate personal health decisions that should be left to patients and their health care providers.
