Some 34 law enforcement agencies across Colorado are working together to combat street racing. This task force was formed because there has been an increase in illegal races in different parts of the state. These dangerous races are becoming more and more common in the south of the state and in the Denver metropolitan area. The police have received complaints of about 1,500 races since October 2020 to the present.
One of these events took place on Interstate 225 on March 7th. The wide lanes of this route were used for high-speed competition. The incident trapped more than 800 motorists for hours until the Aurora Police Department (APD) regained control of the road, reopening the entrance and exit ramps that had been blocked by the organizers of this illegal race.
Street racing has also been reported in Colorado Springs. “During the pandemic, the number of these illegal events increased. We were more concerned than ever. It is very dangerous. In fact, there have been injuries and deaths related to street racing,” said Colorado Springs Councilman Richard Skorman. These events led to the approval of an ordinance on this matter.

The Sanctions
In all Colorado cities, there are ordinances with sanctions for those who participate in these illegal races. Penalties include loss of driver’s licenses, fines of a thousand dollars or more, seizure of vehicles, and serving time in jail. Currently, a minor is on trial in Arapahoe County Court for organizing the illegal March 7th race.
