In an interview with El Comercio de Colorado, Ramiro Cavazos, president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), expressed his deep concern about the possibility of a federal government shutdown due to the lack of agreement in Congress. Cavazos emphasized that this scenario would be unfair and would have serious consequences for the Latino community and the country’s economy.
“The message I want to convey to the political sector, whether Democrats or Republicans, is that they must reach an agreement to keep the government open and continue serving citizens who are meeting their tax obligations. It is not fair for the federal government to close, since this would negatively impact the economy, businesses, and the creation of new companies,” Cavazos said.
Condemns the inability to reach an agreement
The leader added that instead of paralysis, the North American economy needs more investment in infrastructure. “Politicians are not fulfilling their duty to support us. It is ironic that they are elected by us, the citizens, to represent us and make decisions that benefit the country. If a government shutdown were to occur, this would directly affect the American economy, and especially the Latino community,” he said.
Cavazos added that “there are no excuses to shut down the government due to the inability to reach an agreement. Politicians are there to serve us, and I believe it would be a great injustice if this happens. “It is time for politicians to show responsibility and find solutions instead of harming the community and the nation with a government shutdown.” A federal government shutdown is possible starting at midnight on September 30.
Ball in the Republican field
Eyes are focused on the president of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, who has tried to persuade the most radical wing of his party to approve a resolution that finances the Government in the short term and prevents the government from running out of funds, when the new fiscal year begins. McCarthy’s efforts have been unsuccessful, and he finds himself threatened with removal if he cuts a deal with the White House.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has asked federal agencies to make the necessary preparations in the event of being subject to a shutdown. If the public administration runs out of funds, most government agencies, museums and national parks will close their doors, while hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be temporarily out of work and without pay.
