In a significant diplomatic move, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced on Friday that he would host a high-level delegation from the United States on December 27 to discuss the escalating migration crisis. The delegation, led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, will focus on addressing the surge in migration that has strained both nations.

The meeting underscores the strong friendship between Mexico and the United States, highlighted by a recent phone call between President López Obrador and President Joe Biden. The delegation includes not only Secretary Blinken but also Elizabeth Sherwood, in charge of security, and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

The upcoming discussions will delve into various issues, echoing the recent telephonic conversation between the two leaders. Economic matters, relations with Venezuela and Cuba, concerns about the “racist” behavior of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and most importantly, the mounting migration challenge will be on the agenda.

December has witnessed historic numbers of individuals seeking entry into the U.S. through the Mexico-U.S. border. In response to this surge, U.S. authorities have temporarily closed train passages in Eagle Pass and El Paso (Texas) and the Lukeville port of entry (Arizona). Last Monday alone, the U.S. Border Patrol processed over 10,800 cases, primarily asylum seekers.

President López Obrador acknowledged the extraordinary situation arising from the increased number of migrants passing through Mexico en route to the United States. He emphasized the need for collaboration and applauded the use of diplomatic measures, citing the U.S.’s approach to Venezuela as a positive example that also aids in reducing migration flows.

Furthermore, the Mexican president urged the Biden administration to address differences with Cuba and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen containment measures in southern Mexico. He proposed a dual strategy, emphasizing a development plan for Latin American and Caribbean nations and continued efforts to address political issues fueling migration.

In a complementary announcement from the White House, it was revealed that Secretary Blinken, accompanied by Secretary Mayorkas and advisor Elizabeth Sherwood, would travel to Mexico in the coming days. The primary focus of the trip is to engage in discussions with President López Obrador regarding the surging migration phenomenon.

During a phone call between President Biden and López Obrador, both leaders emphasized the urgent need for additional measures to reopen key entry ports along their common border. The temporary closures of train passages and ports of entry highlight the severity of the situation.

As the migration crisis escalates, this joint effort by Mexico and the United States signifies a crucial diplomatic collaboration to find effective solutions. The forthcoming discussions aim to address the root causes of migration, explore policy adjustments, and strengthen bilateral cooperation, underscoring the significance of international coordination in managing global challenges.
