John Walsh, Democratic candidate for Denver District Attorney, has declared that one of his primary objectives, if elected, will be to combat the presence of the international criminal gang known as Tren de Aragua (TDA). Walsh, who served as U.S. Attorney in Colorado, emphasizes the importance of collaborating with federal authorities to tackle this criminal organization.
According to Walsh, although only one or two cases related to the TDA have been detected in Denver so far, it is crucial to act preventively to avoid the gang’s growing influence in the city. The role of Denver District Attorney is an elected position, responsible for enforcing state laws within the City and County of Denver.
“The District Attorney not only prosecutes criminal cases but also works closely with local and federal law enforcement to ensure public safety. Additionally, the District Attorney plays a key role in overseeing police conduct and implementing policies that impact criminal justice in the community,” explains Walsh.

Preventing Youth Violence
This attorney and former federal prosecutor in Colorado has identified several major challenges he will face if elected. “First, I highlight the need to address violent crimes, especially those related to the use of firearms,” he said. According to Walsh, a small but dangerous group of individuals is causing havoc in the city, particularly among youths aged 14 to 16.
For Walsh, it is essential not only to prosecute existing cases but also to work with the community to prevent youth violence. Another significant challenge is the drug addiction problem in Denver. Walsh advocates for a dual approach that combines strict law enforcement with the provision of rehabilitation services for those trapped in the cycle of addiction.
Aggressive Action Against Vehicle Theft
“We need to enforce the law effectively and decisively while also providing the necessary services to help people break free from addiction,” says Walsh. Additionally, Walsh has highlighted the increase in vehicle thefts in the city as one of his priorities. Although he acknowledges that the situation has improved over the past year, he believes Denver’s District Attorney’s Office can play a more aggressive role in reducing this crime.
He proposes the creation of a joint task force with the Denver police, state government, and other district attorney offices in the metropolitan area to tackle the problem comprehensively. Walsh also emphasizes the importance of strengthening the relationship between the District Attorney’s Office and the Denver police. As a former U.S. Attorney, he has worked on training law enforcement and believes it is crucial to continue improving the quality of police efforts in the city.
He underscores the importance of officers enforcing the law effectively, but also with respect and in compliance with the Constitution. Finally, Walsh acknowledges the need for greater communication with the Spanish-speaking community, which makes up 32% of the city’s population. He proposes creating a committee of Hispanic community representatives to advise him and enhance the understanding of how the justice system works.
For Walsh, it is essential that all communities in the city be informed and actively participate in improving public safety.
