Scott Esserman presents himself first and foremost as a father with school-aged children. Esserman also expresses with satisfaction his experience as a teacher in public and private schools. Additionally, this candidate has served on the boards of non-profit organizations and has been a community activist in defense of public education.
“The DPS’s most urgent need is to ensure that we deliver on the promise of public education. If your child enters one of the DPS schools, he must graduate prepared for his future, whether it be college, pursuing a career path, or working,” says Esserman.
This candidate is concerned that changes are not taking place at the speed he expects. Esserman assured, “I have been listening to what the public has been saying for a decade, such as ‘we want and need to do the best for our students.’ The community has expressed it in different ways, and we have ignored it.”
Correct Inequalities
And he continued, “Incremental changes have taken place. I think graduation rates have increased maybe 4 percent in the last 10 years. That’s not enough. The problem is not that we don’t know what to do, it’s that the will to produce change has been lacking. DPS needs people with the experience, the will, and the desire to make changes.”
Esserman is convinced that he is the one to advance the change. “I believe I have a responsibility to question the systems and structures that have caused inequalities that harm minority members of our community,” he concluded.
