I have just released the 2023 Audit Plan, which includes my office’s priorities for the coming year. The plan lists the ongoing audits from this year and several new ones, such as the certification for disadvantaged businesses, and businesses owned by women and people of color.

In a previous edition of this column, I explained how my Audit Services division plays an essential role in Denver’s transparency and good governance. Our audit work assesses whether your tax dollars are well managed by examining city programs, finances, information technology, and city contracts.

My 2023 Audit Plan is based on community concerns, feedback from city leaders, and our risk assessment process. One of the issues that community members repeatedly shared with us is how the city meets its goals of supporting disadvantaged businesses and businesses owned by women and people of color. Equity in Denver is an important topic for my office, and that’s why I added it to my Audit Plan.

Other audits we plan for next year include the administration of on-call contracts and the separation process for employees who leave their jobs with the City and County of Denver.

As with every year, some of the work that started in 2022 will be completed in 2023. This is the case for the audits of affordable housing, city shelters, and residential permits. We will also continue to look at encampments for people experiencing homelessness, the construction of the Great Hall at the Denver airport, and child welfare placements.

Please read more about my office’s roles and the work we will be doing on your behalf in the coming months. Our audits can help city agencies make the city an even greater place for people to live, work, and spend time.
