In 2024, the United States recorded the highest demographic growth in over two decades, according to a recent report from the Census Bureau. This increase is primarily attributed to net international migration, which accounted for 84% of the 3.3 million new residents added to the country between 2023 and 2024.

Within this migrant population, Hispanics have played a central role, standing out as the group that contributes most to the country’s demographic and economic dynamism. Reasons for the increase in immigrant numbers include the implementation of new measures by the Census Bureau to track international migration, including individuals admitted for humanitarian reasons.

This shift reflects not only a growth trend but also the need to recognize the crucial role migrants play in American society. However, while the country moves in this direction, the mass deportation policies planned by the upcoming Donald Trump administration could reverse these achievements and have devastating consequences for migrant communities and the national economy.

Demands from Organizations

Pro-immigrant organizations have raised their voices to address this situation. Groups such as CASA, United We Dream, and the Council of Mexican Federations are urging Congress to take concrete steps to protect migrants. Their primary demands include blocking funding for mass deportations, ensuring the continuation of programs like DACA and TPS, and facilitating the regularization of immigration status for thousands of individuals already residing in the country.

Lydia Walther-Rodriguez, a representative of CASA, emphasized the importance of these actions: “We know the next president has promised mass deportations, but Congress has the opportunity to stop these plans by not allocating the necessary budgets for their implementation. We urge legislators to invest in supporting migrant families, not in policies that separate them.”

The impact of mass deportations is not limited to migrant families. Economists and activists warn that such policies could destabilize sectors like agriculture, construction, and services, industries that heavily rely on migrant labor. Experts caution that a reduction in the migrant population could slow economic growth, diminish innovation, and weaken U.S. competitiveness.

Respect for Rights

In this context, community leaders and activists stress the urgency of a humane and strategic approach to migration. “Hispanics not only contribute to population growth but also to the country’s economic and social development. We must ensure their rights are respected and that they can continue contributing without fear of deportation,” stated Claudia Quiñonez of United We Dream.
