With an audience of over 200 attendees at the Stampede Hall in Aurora, the general consuls of Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador, and Honduras hosted the informational event “Know Your Rights.” The event aimed to provide practical tools and messages of calm and preparation amid potential changes to U.S. federal immigration policies.
Pável Meléndez Cruz, Consul General of Mexico in Denver, highlighted the existing consular protection strategies, including initiatives like the Center for Information and Assistance to Mexicans (CIAM) and the “My Consulate” app. “It is crucial for nationals to know and exercise their rights. Our commitment is to ensure that no Mexican feels unprotected,” stated Meléndez Cruz.
Stay Calm and Keep Your Documents in Order
Pedro Pablo Delgado, Consul General of Peru, emphasized the importance of remaining calm and prepared. “It is essential for migrants to have their documents in order, such as passports and translated documents, and to respect the laws of this country. We want our community to feel supported and encouraged to reach out to the consulates to address their concerns,” he noted.
Moramay Godoy, Consul General of Guatemala, echoed the call for calm and organization. “We must not be afraid. This is the time to be prepared, to respect the laws of this great nation, and to keep our documents up to date. A clear action plan, tailored to each individual’s circumstances and family situation, can make a significant difference,” she remarked.

Notarial Powers and Respect for the Law
Similarly, Jonathan Ortiz, Consul General of El Salvador, stressed the importance of acting with foresight and responsibility. “It is essential for Salvadoran families to keep their documents current and consider measures such as notarial powers to protect their assets and ensure their children’s well-being. Knowing their rights and duties is key to avoiding problems,” he said.
Finally, Tamara Toro, Consul General of Honduras, reaffirmed her country’s commitment to its migrants. “The Honduran government is committed to protecting its citizens. For our government, migrants are our priority. Complying with U.S. laws is fundamental to ensuring the stability and well-being of our community,” she emphasized.
The Migrant Community Is Not Alone
The event also featured a panel of expert immigration attorneys who offered free guidance and addressed attendees’ questions. The session concluded with a sense of empowerment and unity among those present. The consuls reiterated their commitment to working together to protect and support the migrant community.
“Staying informed, organized, and respecting the laws are essential steps for the peace and security of our families,” was the message from Meléndez Cruz, echoed by all the consular representatives. The successful turnout reflects the consulates’ collective efforts in Colorado to provide effective support to the migrant community, reaffirming that they are not alone during these uncertain times.
