The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted its full authorization to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. Although Pfizer was previously only approved for emergency use, it has now become the first COVID vaccine in the US to achieve this status.

The current commissioner of the FDA, Janet Woodcock, assures that with this final approval the American population will be safe. “This vaccine meets the FDA’s gold standards for safety, efficacy, and build quality,” said Woodcock.

Authorized for those Over 16

The official added, “This is a crucial moment for our country in the fight against the pandemic since we are well aware that this vaccine is one of our greatest weapons against the virus.” It is currently only applied to those over 12 years old.

This pharmaceutical company must collect more data on the use of the vaccine for persons between 12 and 15 years of age to achieve full authorization. This procedure could take several months.

FDA Reviews other Vaccines

So far, more than 170 million Americans in the US are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, of which more than 92 million have received the Pfizer vaccine. The FDA is now reviewing the information provided by Moderna, the other vaccine developer that has developed a messenger-RNA shot like Pfizer.

Johnson & Johnson, which developed the third vaccine to be approved for emergency use in the US, is expected to reach full authorization soon. This vaccine was developed from an adenovirus, like traditional vaccines.
