Pável Meléndez Cruz was appointed as the new Consul General of Mexico in Denver. The arrival of Meléndez Cruz is about to be announced soon. The new Consul General hopes that the US Department of State will accept and respond to the notification of his appointment. This is the first diplomatic assignment for Meléndez Cruz.
Meléndez Cruz already has in his possession the patent letter that accredits him to serve in the Mexican consulting agency that serves the states of Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. This Denver-based consulate serves nearly a million Mexicans residing with the hundreds of counties in those three Midwestern states and surrounding areas.
This politician, born in Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, was appointed consul by President López Obrador in September 2022. His appointment successfully passed the scrutiny of the Foreign Relations Commission and the North American Foreign Relations Commission. The new consul outlined his work plan before those instances of the Senate.
Promoter of the migrant deputy
Meléndez Cruz has a degree in Political and Administrative Sciences from UNAM. He held the world vice-presidency of the International Socialist Youth (IUSY) and was advisor to the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Congress of the Union. He was a Deputy and director of the Oaxaca Congress, where he chaired the Migration and International Affairs Commission.
In his performance as a deputy, Meléndez Cruz promoted the initiative to incorporate a migrant deputy. This innovative figure seeks to represent the Oaxacan diaspora in the state parliament. This bill was approved unanimously and will enter into force in the regional legislative elections of 2024.
Also as a legislator, he was the author of reforms such as the criminalization of attacks on medical and health personnel in times of pandemic. His other two successful proposals were to achieve recognition of the rights of short people in Oaxaca, as well as to guarantee the budget for the most remote indigenous communities in his state.

Journalistic practice
The electronic publication “Poder Ciudadano” indicates that Meléndez Cruz collaborated in the administration of López Obrador during his administration as head of the Government of Mexico City. This Oaxacan “has always accompanied [López Obrador] in his fight for transformation since the beginning of his political career,” says “Poder Ciudadano.”
Meléndez Cruz has done radio journalism for many years. He has been a guest columnist for the newspaper El Universal. From 2013 to 2015 he was a columnist for the Oaxacan newspaper Noticias, with his column “El Soberanista”, in the magazine Valores. He has also been a commentator and political analyst on international and domestic issues.
Celebrating
Meléndez Cruz was one of the guests for the celebration of 200 years of the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the US. This commemoration was also attended by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Roberto Velasco Álvarez, Head of the Unit for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ken Salazar, US Ambassador to Mexico and a native of Colorado.
