Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United States (HHS), called on the American population to get vaccinated with the new booster dose against covid “immediately”, since it is “the best protection” against the disease during the Christmas. Becerra: “It’s time to get vaccinated to protect our loved ones”.

“If you don’t have the new booster dose yet, now is the time to get vaccinated. Especially because during Christmas we are going to be very close to our relatives and it is time to be protected and protect those who are going to be with us,” he said.

Becerra reminds the public that the covid vaccine costs nothing. “The vaccine remains free and continues to be accessible at sites across the nation. So there is no reason not to get vaccinated,” Becerra reiterated. The secretary said that the influenza vaccine is also available

The pandemic in perspective

With more than a million deaths, the United States is the country in the world with the highest number of deaths from covid-19. 69 percent of the population has received both doses of the vaccine in this country, where the response to the pandemic has been highly politicized.

Becerra asserted that they have “the tools” to face this “new face of the pandemic”, although he stressed the need for the population to be vaccinated against this latest dose of the virus. The authorities have warned about a possible wave of covid-19 for Christmas.

Collaborate with local governments

Covid is no longer the destructive force it once was, although the Government does not want this winter to resemble the previous one or from two years ago. The Government will re-enable their website to request up to four free covid tests per household.

Becerra said that they are going to collaborate with the governors and local leaders of the states so that they have the federal support available to open more vaccination centers and expand covid testing programs. They do not plan to make masks mandatory.
