All six lanes of traffic in the lower section of I-70 go into operation on the morning of May 24. The commissioning of these lanes represents an important advancement in the largest highway project in Colorado today. “Beginning Monday, the 24th, the project team will move the six lanes of I-70 traffic off the viaduct and onto the lower section of the highway,” said Elizabeth Suárez, Spanish spokesperson for the Central 70 project.

This new section of I-70 is located between the Brighton and Colorado boulevards. “The plan has been developed with high quality standards and advanced technology,” added Suárez. This change in traffic will allow project crews to safely demolish the 57-year-old viaduct and begin constructing the future eastbound low lanes of I-70.

Suárez indicated that as of Monday, May 24, the exit ramp from I-70 eastbound to Steele / Vásquez boulevard will be closed. Access to these roads will be through Colorado Boulevard in the direction of 46th Avenue. “Motorists should plan to stay under this new traffic configuration for approximately 18 months until the construction is finished,” added Suárez.

Reason for Celebration

Coloradans had the opportunity to tour the lower section of I-70 before it was opened to the public. “I circle the viaduct every day and could not see the progress. What I am seeing fills me with satisfaction. I feel excited walking this way. Today is a historic day,” confessed Juan Alberto Lima Lucero, resident for fifty years in the Globeville area.

Those who walked the new lanes of I-70 enjoyed an exhibition related to this road. Similar to a museum, 25 stations were observed in chronological sequence to learn more about the origins of the interstate transportation system and its evolution. The exhibit showcased the history of the Globeville, Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods and described the actions they recently took to protect the residents of these neighborhoods.
