The Hispanic population is the ethnic minority with the lowest percentage of vaccinations in Boulder County. By the end of September 2021, 53 percent of Hispanics had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This percentage is below the general average for people in Boulder County at 83 percent. The percentage of those vaccinated with at least one dose among Native Americans, Asians, and African Americans exceeded 60 percent.

The age distribution of Hispanics with at least 1 dose indicates that the amount of those vaccinated increases with age. 83 percent of Hispanics over 70 have at minimum one dose. That percentage decreases with age. The age factor explains the resistance of Rosa López, a Longmont resident, to get vaccinated. “I don’t think I need to get vaccinated,” said this mother of two.

“Vaccines help but I think that over the years they will have a diminished effect because they were developed too quickly,” López continued. Victor Lemus Vargas, another county resident, responded to Lopez. “The vaccine was not made by just anyone, it was made by scientists at an international level and is designed to do no harm. On the contrary, it is made to improve our health and avoid putting our families, our friends and our loved ones at risk,” he assured.

Message to Unvaccinated Hispanics

Lemus Vargas, who took both doses of Moderna’s vaccine, left a message to those who resist vaccination. “I am concerned about the people who do not want to be vaccinated. This is a problem that can affect all the people around us and we also live at risk if we are not vaccinated. Please, all Latinos must be safe and healthy. We can still get COVID. By getting vaccinated we will all be more resistant, and we will reduce the chances of getting infected.”
