Those who fail to comply with the new immigration policy

President Biden thanked Andrés Manuel López Obrador for receiving migrants who do not follow the channels established in the new US immigration policy. The US plans to host up to 30,000 Nicaraguans, Cubans, Haitians, and Venezuelans per month. These people must comply with the procedure established by the government. Those who fail to comply with the new immigration policy will be immediately deported.

“I want to thank you, Mr. President, for taking a step forward and receiving in Mexico those who do not follow the legal paths that we have established, instead of trying to cross the border between our countries,” he said at the end of the trilateral meeting with López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the X Summit of North American Leaders.

Drop illegal border crossing

The US will welcome up to 30,000 migrants from those countries as long as they access by air and never through the land border, in which case they will be deported to Mexico. Biden pointed out that a few days after implementing his new policy, they have managed to “drastically” reduce the number of Venezuelans seeking to cross from Mexico to the US.

“(It has been a) successful program that we had for Venezuela to provide safe, humane and orderly processes for those seeking asylum. This has reduced the number of people trying to cross the border illegally. The number of Venezuelans has dropped drastically”, highlighted the US president.

Biden specified that before the implementation of the measure, some 1,100 people tried to enter the United States irregularly daily “and this has dropped to 250 per day,” he said. Biden recalled that the goal now is to provide “safe, humane, and orderly” processes for those seeking asylum on US soil.

Avoid risks of crossing by land

He acknowledged that migrants make a “long journey” to reach the border and that many times they are victims of organized crime for what they have to pay and for the physical effects. “We want to make it easier for people to arrive but not to go through this terrible process,” he argued.

He promised that they will continue working to address the causes to promote people staying in their countries of origin, which is why he asked the US Congress for 4,000 million dollars to support this initiative, while Vice President Kamala Harris seeks to raise 3,000 million dollars in donations private.

“We can do more (to) expedite legal migration, we can also do it by preventing or helping the communities to improve their circumstances,” he said. Biden affirmed that the immigration crisis on the border “is already very well underway”, thanks to the collaboration of the Mexican government.

Record number of migrants

During the fiscal year of 2022, the detention of 2.76 million undocumented migrants was registered, an unprecedented number. During 2022, according to data from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar), Mexico received 118,478 petitions from migrants seeking asylum, the second highest figure after 2021 with 131,448 cases.
