Ballot Proposal 2Q in the City and County of Denver proposes a 0.34% increase in Denver’s sales tax, equivalent to 3.4 cents for every $10 in purchases, to fund the Denver Health hospital system. This increase would generate around $70 million annually, aimed at supporting vital services such as trauma care, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment.
Denver Health serves nearly 300,000 people each year, providing care regardless of patients’ ability to pay. The hospital system faces significant financial challenges due to rising healthcare costs and uncompensated care for uninsured or low-income individuals. As these costs grow, Denver Health has become a crucial support network for many in the community seeking protection.
Opposition
A significant portion of Denver Health’s beneficiaries includes homeless individuals, victims of violence, pregnant teens, and other vulnerable groups. If Proposal 2Q is approved, the total sales tax in Denver would rise to 9.15%. The proposal has received support from political figures and local organizations, though some critics, like Colorado Union of Taxpayers President Kim Monson, have voiced opposition.
Opponents argue that excessive taxes impact residents’ ability to meet their daily needs. Additionally, some believe that issues related to the cost of care for recent immigrants should be addressed before requesting a tax increase. The decision will be up to Denver voters in the November 5, 2024 election.
