Residents of the apartment complex at 1568 Nome St., near Colfax in Aurora, have expressed their relief and support for the city’s decision to declare the property uninhabitable and order its eviction. This measure was taken due to severe code violations that threatened the health and safety of the residents.

One neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted: “We had daily problems with trash, people defecating outside, using drugs, and having sex in the hallway. We heard gunshots, and there were problematic people damaging the fences of my house to pass through. I have a six-year-old daughter, and we feared for our safety.” The neighbor added that despite reporting these incidents to the authorities and the property owner, the situation did not improve.

Another resident, affected by the violence in the area, commented: “About 15 days ago, I was leaving for work at 7:00 a.m. when there was a shootout between the police and two men. They threw us to the ground, and I couldn’t go to work. I’ve had to crouch down and stay inside the house for fear of stray bullets. I have a 15-year-old son and a six-year-old niece, and the fear of going out is constant.” The resident emphasized that they have kept the property owner informed about the situation.

Eviction before August 13

This morning, the city of Aurora notified the residents of the eviction, ordering the evacuation before August 13. This action was the last legal measure available to the city after the property owner failed to resolve the code violations. Code Enforcement teams distributed notices in English and Spanish and provided on-site assistance to help residents find new housing and access community resources.
