A special evening unfolded at the Denver Art Museum (DAM), where local poets German González, Arturo García, and Mavy Barraza delighted the audience with original pieces filled with political humor and satire. Laughter echoed in the room as their clever “calaveritas” were shared, leaving a pleasant taste and a lasting memory thanks to the exquisite penmanship of these talented writers.

The special guest of the night, the Consul General of Mexico in Denver, Pável Meléndez Cruz, added a special touch to the event. Meléndez Cruz had the task of reciting a “calaverite” written by González. It was exciting to hear him recite the historic “Calaverita Oaxaqueña” published by José Guadalupe Posada in the early 20th century. “This reading of the Calaveritas has had a special flavor,” said Jesús Sánchez Meleán, editor of El Comercio de Colorado.

Thankful to DAM
“We appreciate that the DAM has allowed us to read the calaveritas right within the first exhibition in honor of Posada. Year after year, by publishing the calaveritas of Dia de Muertos, we are following a tradition started by Posada. In 2023, El Comercio’s calaveritas were illustrated by the visual artist Julio Mendoza, also in honor of Posada,” said Sánchez Meleán, who also thanked the presence of the guests at the event.
