A portion of the 56-year-old viaduct formerly part of I-70 has been demolished. “The demolition of the viaduct constitutes an important aspect of the Central 70 project. These tasks are carried out in accordance with all international protection and security standards and are being carried out with great success. It is estimated that the demolition will be completed by the end of the summer,” said Elizabeth Suárez, Spanish spokeswoman for the aforementioned project from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

This project, which began in August of 2018, will exceed a total of 1.2 billion dollars. “We are on time to finish it according to the initial schedule of between 4 and 5 years. By the end of 2021, we will be seeing significant changes in the work,” said Suárez. In late May 2021, all six lanes of I-70 traffic moved from the old viaduct to the new lower section of I-70 between Brighton and Colorado Boulevard. And as soon as the demolition of the viaduct is complete, the construction of more traffic lanes will commence.

While it can be tempting to watch the I-70 viaduct being demolished while driving through Project Central 70, CDOT urges drivers not to get distracted. Do not take photos while driving. Maintain the 55-mph speed limit and keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. This will not only reduce the number of times you need to brake, but it will also minimize the risk of colliding with the vehicle in front of you,” Suárez reiterated.
