Aurora Unveils 10-Year Immigrant Integration Plan

The city of Aurora has unveiled a 10-year Immigrant Integration Plan, “Aurora is open to the world.” As Colorado’s third-largest city and one of the most diverse large cities in the United States, Aurora created one of the nation’s first municipal strategic plans for immigrant integration in 2015 and remains the only Colorado city with a comprehensive strategic plan for immigrant integration.

“One in five Aurora residents was born outside the US, and we believe that the success of our residents, and therefore the success of our city, depends on how we can work together and integrate all people,” he said. Ricardo Gambetta, director of the Office of International Affairs and Immigrant Affairs, entity that was in charge of developing the 2015 integration plan and which is now beginning to be implemented.

“Our plan for the current decade focuses on goals that meet the needs of the community, with specific ideas for their implementation,” said Gambetta. Among the 12 goal areas are included: fostering entrepreneurship; promoting affordable housing; working on job skills and certifications; promoting the learning of the English language; and building relationships with law enforcement agencies.

Mission accomplished

This new plan will take advantage of the successes achieved with the previous plan. Gambetta highlighted the great impact that the Natural Helpers Program has had. This program has trained more than 150 immigrants from 25 countries to be leaders in their communities and become sources of information on local resources. Gambetta also mentioned the support programs for small entrepreneurs who are immigrants during the pandemic.
