Nearly 30 organizations announced the creation of the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC). With this alliance, the participating organizations intend to join forces to fight for bipartisan solutions to immigration and border security in the United States Congress.

The alliance, which includes religious, business, community leader, and immigrant advocates will focus its work on building support for legislative solutions that have the support of Democrats and Republicans. The initiative seeks to promote legislation that provides permanent protection for “dreamers” and agricultural workers.

Additionally, the new group identified as ANIC will support orderly, safe, and humane immigration processes at the US border. These points were outlined in a joint statement issued by representatives of the three dozen organizations currently coordinating efforts for immigration reform.

Message to Legislators

In its first act, ANIC sent a letter to leaders of both parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives. In this letter, the bipartisan leadership was asked for “congressional action on immigration reform.” “At no other time in recent history has the need for immigration reform been greater than it is today,” they said.

The document adds that the immigration system is broken. They highlight those millions of workers, many of whom were indispensable during the covid-19 pandemic, who are “experiencing legal danger.” “The two parties have an opportunity to reach a much-needed consensus,” said Ali Noorani of the National Immigration Forum.

President of LIBRE speaks

For his part, Daniel Garza, president of the LIBRE Initiative, an organization that is also a member of ANIC, pointed out that a “consensus” must be achieved. “At no other point in recent history has the need for immigration reform been greater than it is today,” said Garza.

Garza, who supports an immigration reform that includes dreamers, highlighted a fall 2021 survey from the LIBRE Initiative. This survey found that 93 percent of voters in the United States agree that immigration reform is necessary and urgent.

“Simply put, the system is broken. Strategic organization and advancement of a consensus-based immigration campaign presents an opportunity to offer immigration as a key part of the solution to issues that are top of mind for the American public,” concluded Garza.

Purposes of the initiative

• Address the uncertainty of undocumented immigrants who contribute to the economy.

• Strengthen the capacity to manage the border in a safe, orderly, and humane manner.

• Provide protection support for Dreamers, TPS recipients, and farmworkers.
