There was a time— not too long ago—where Colorado families felt like this state was a safe place to live, work, and raise a family. I know, because I experienced it as a boy growing up in our once beautiful state.

My mother and father did not hesitate to let my brothers and I ride our bikes in our neighborhood, walk to nearby parks, or play outside with neighbors without constant, high-alert supervision. It’s a concept that sounds foreign today, but a reality that I pray we can one day experience again.

As a former police officer in Arvada, Colorado, I witnessed firsthand the saddening and grim circumstances of communities across our state today. I answered the call for tragic drug overdoses and violent disputes that left innocent families with devastating loss. I buried two police brothers who wore the badge.

The job comes with heartache, devastation, and trauma that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. But it was a job that allowed me to help people, to serve and protect my community, and to leave the state just a bit safer than I found it. After a decade of service, however, I felt like I could no longer accomplish those goals.

The policies put in place by Denver Democrats at the state legislature rewarded criminals for their crimes, and handcuffed cops for simply trying to keep their local neighborhoods safe.

That is exactly why I decided to run for Colorado’s Eighth District. We needed a voice in Congress that would push back on these reckless rules and regulations.

I will not allow my two boys, my family, and my community to suffer in such an unsafe environment. Thanks to the Democrats’ state policies, Colorado now has the second worst crime rate in the nation. Drug overdoses continue to rise—despite decreases across the country—and violent gangs and terrorist organizations have free reign in our neighborhoods.

It’s individuals like Manny Rutinel that encourage that. As a state legislator, he voted to legalize hard-drug injection sites, which incentivizes gangs, cartels, and other drug traffickers to flood our cities and state with Fentanyl, Tusi, and other life threatening substances that have taken too many innocent lives. Over 10% of all fentanyl in the country is trafficked in Colorado.

Unfortunately his radical record doesn’t stop there. Rutinel also voted against mandatory prison sentences for violent people who have sex trafficked our children. This is absolutely inexcusable. As a father of two young boys, I can not fathom protecting pedofiles, sex offenders,
