El Tri returns to the Mile-High City after an absence of nearly three years. In 2021, the Mexican national team played in the Final Four of the Concacaf Nations League, defeating Costa Rica in a penalty shootout in the semifinals. El Tri lost in the final to the United States 3-2. Previously, the Mexican team had played in Denver in 2019 against Canada, in 2017 against Jamaica, and in 2013 against Martinique in the Gold Cup.
The Mexican team also faced Bolivia in Denver, both in 2009 and 2014. They played friendly matches in Colorado’s capital against New Zealand in 2011, Colombia in 2007, and the United States in 2002. The match against Uruguay, on June 5th in the Bronco’s stadium, will serve as a test for Jaime Lozano’s Tri, aiming to position themselves within the top four spots in the Copa América.
At the same time, we cannot overlook this game as a consolation prize for the City of Denver. Colorado’s capital had prepared to host some of the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches but was excluded from this tournament, which will have venues in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Meanwhile, El Tri will arrive on June 8 to play for the first time in College Station, Texas.
