We spoke with US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg about President Joe Biden’s first year in office. “Since he took office, we have seen more jobs created than the first year of any presidency in American history. It has been an extraordinarily productive first year,” said. Butiggieg concluded “what we must do now is continue to keep prices low for Americans as we face these pressures of inflation.”

Jesus Sanchez Melean: What is the greatest achievement of the Biden administration?

Secretary Pete Buttigieg: Well, in one year, President Biden has led an extraordinary recovery, faced with enormous challenges because of the pandemic and the other problems that America was confronting when he took office. Since he took office, we have seen more jobs created than the first year of any presidency in American history.

Got checks out to families that were hurting economically; got shots in arms for so many who needed protection from the virus. And, of course, we’re able to pass historic legislation with the American rescue plan and the bipartisan infrastructure law that will transform transportation for the rest of our lifetimes.

It has been an extraordinarily productive first year. But as you have heard tonight from the President, there is a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of us.

JS: What could have been done better?

PB: Well, historians one day will be able to look back and assess everything that has happened and every choice that was made. But right now, we are squarely focused on continuing to meet the challenges of the moment. And what we must do now is continue to keep prices low for Americans as we face these pressures of inflation.

We need to continue American leadership around the world, especially as we see the unprovoked attack on Ukraine by Russia, rightly. Drawing condemnation from around the world and ensure that we are confronting some of the biggest challenges that have ever come at humanity, such as climate change.

There will be a long time in the future for evaluating and second guessing, but right now, I can tell you that we are hard at work and focused on the things that matter the most.
