Governor Jared Polis, joined by United States Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar and the Consul General of Mexico, Mr. Rendon Talavera, highlighted the important relationship between Colorado and Mexico. Polis indicated that Mexico is Colorado’s second-largest trade partner and that it maintains strong cultural ties. Mexico is a top export destination for Colorado with meat, aluminum, articles of iron and steel, industrial machinery, electric machinery, motor vehicles, and optic instruments, as well as an import source for Colorado.

The governor explained that important Colorado companies have functions in Mexico. “Several Colorado businesses have operations in Mexico, such as Aero Dish, EchoStar, VF Ball, and Newmont, generating jobs on both sides of the border. There are huge opportunities for growth in financial technology, clean tech, and cybersecurity due to this scenario,” Polis said.

Polis continued, “There are also many Mexican businesses that have invested in Colorado, creating hundreds and thousands of jobs across our state. Bimbo Bakeries has over four hundred and fifty jobs in food manufacturing in Colorado. Grupo Sarmiento State Chihuahua has several locations in Colorado, including their U.S. corporate offices, with over 300 employees. Mission Foods has 450 employees, including 300 alone in their Pueblo plant. This is a point of pride for Colorado.”

Trade Mission in Spring

Polis announced, “This spring, I look forward to engaging with the Biennial of the Americas being hosted in Mexico City, as well as organizing a trade mission. The close relationship we have with Mexico is something of great value to every Coloradan. I want to thank Ambassador Salazar for being with us today to provide an update for his strong leadership, and we look forward to visiting with him in Mexico City.
