Molly Lamar is running to represent congressional district 6 on the Colorado State Board of Education. When asked if she had the chance to improve one aspect of education in Colorado, she responded saying literacy. Lamar followed this up by expressing her belief that “literacy is the foundation of an excellent education.” She notes that nowadays it’s rare to see children reading books and so it’s her goal to change that and bring that habit back. She even said that she thinks it’s important to first learn to read in their native language, whether that be Spanish or something else, to be able to communicate with their parents.

Education important for combating drugs

When it comes to combating and preventing drug use among young kids, Lamar believes that education is vital. “Children who are focused on education and are thriving in school and have their parents involved in their lives and their education are far less likely to engage in activities that involve drugs, gang activities” is what Lamar said about the challenge of fighting drug use in schools. She continued by saying that when children are focused on reading, writing, math, history, and other subjects they don’t want to do drugs or risky activities.

An important perspective

Lamar is passionate about education, and she believes that she has an important perspective that makes her a great fit for the state board of education. Besides having been a teacher and having multiple relatives who are or have been teachers, Lamar is a mother of four school aged kids. She believes that the state needs a parent’s voice on the board of education. Being a mother of young children, she believes that she has a unique perspective and can represent children’s and student’s voices on the state board of education.
