Colorado health authorities have set up a local laboratory to test those possibly affected by COVID- 19, or coronavirus. “This testing center will help the state test as many people as possible and improve the public health response by identifying and isolating those who are ill. This approach also helps to protect older adults and people with compromised immune systems,” said Jared Polis, Governor of Colorado. All these lab tests are free.

Polis has stated this lab has enough test kits for several days and will continue to receive additional testing material from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The governor emphasized that the state has expanded its ability to perform the laboratory tests through agreements with LabCop and other private laboratories. “We continue to stress the need for personal action such as staying home when sick, keeping kids home when they’re sick, and diligently washing your hands,” said Polis.

Postponing Travels to Mountains

Polis recommended postponing travels to the mountains until the situation is under control. Currently, there are 9 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Pitkin County, where large ski areas such as Aspen are located. The infected contacted an Australian visitor who tested positive for the virus. These visitors are currently in quarantine. “We hope that these folks recover quickly and there is no additional spread in Pitkin County,” said the governor.

Schools and Universities

The governor also said should a school have a case of the virus; the institution would close for 72 hours to clean the entire building. Should two cases of the virus occur in several schools in a school district, they would urge school authorities to close for 15 days. Polis showed his approval for the decision of the Colorado University (CU) in its three campuses Metro State University (MSU Denver) and Colorado State to begin online instruction after Spring Break break.
