Civic Center Park will come alive again the weekend of May 8th with the sounds, food and culture of Latin America. During that first weekend of May, the 33rd annual festival “Cinco de Mayo, celebrating our culture” will take place. This event that began as a small celebration has grown into one of the largest Cinco de Mayo commemorative events in the world.
Year after year, the celebration in Denver remembers the victory of heroic people and their struggle for freedom. On May 5, 1862, in the state of Puebla, the Mexican army, outnumbered by its opponents, defeated the French forces. This victory provided the impetus and national confidence to expel the Gallic invaders from Mexican territory. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of freedom and culture.
Parade, music and Chihuahua races
“The event is about bringing people together and highlighting the beauty and tradition of the Latino culture. Denver has a very rich Latino culture that is underrepresented at other big city events. We are very proud to bring that Hispanic spirit to the heart of Denver and highlight all the incredible Hispanic artists, musicians, and businesses,” said Andrea Barela, president and CEO of NEWSED, the organization that leads the event.
The celebration will begin with a colorful parade. Meanwhile, throughout the two days, it will be possible to enjoy different shows of many cultural genres on the three stages at different points in Civic Center Park. And as usual, those who attend will be able to be part of the chihuahua races, the taco eating competition, and the lowrider car show.

Mexican and Hispanic cuisine
Those who want to get up early will be able to participate in the non-denominational mass that will take place on Sunday the 8th at 10 am. The little ones will find fun in the Civic Center Park. Meanwhile, everyone will be more than satisfied with the amazing dishes that they will have at their disposal. You can get the best Mexican and Latin American dishes.
