Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is coming to several major corridors in the Denver Metro area. The Colorado Department of Transportation is moving forward with BRT on Federal Boulevard, Colorado Boulevard and Highway 119 with future plans on Highway 7 and eventually an extension of the Colfax BRT line that is being built by the City and County of Denver. 

BRT is a high-capacity, efficient bus service that incorporates elements of light rail. It combines the capacity and efficiency of light rail with the flexibility, cost and simplicity of a bus. BRT will complement the existing passenger rail lines and provide another transportation option. 

Federal Boulevard is one of the busiest transit corridors in the Denver Metro area. Currently, buses on Federal Boulevard experience significant delays, resulting in long travel times for riders. BRT will help reduce travel times and improve reliability for current riders and encourage new riders to use transit. 

Corridor of nearly 18 milles 

The plan for Federal Boulevard is for BRT to span nearly 18 miles of the corridor, from Dartmouth Avenue to 120th Avenue. The BRT buses will also tie to major RTD stations on either end, from the Englewood light rail station on the southern end of the corridor via Dartmouth Avenue, to the Wagon Road Park-n-Ride along 120th Avenue on the northern end of the corridor.  

BRT will run more frequently and connect with other bus and rail lines for more seamless connections. It will operate in a dedicated lane wherever possible. This could be in the far right-hand lane or in the center of the roadway. Throughout each BRT corridor, buses will use technology to communicate with traffic signals as they approach an intersection, giving them the green light faster. This means there will be less delay for both buses and general traffic. 

Currently, the project is in the preliminary design and environmental phase of the project, which will conclude this fall. The design phase comes next and extends through mid 2027, with construction expected to begin in late 2027 for the next couple of years. Bus rapid transit on Federal Boulevard is planned to be up and running by 2030.
