President Biden blamed Donald Trump for the possible failure of a bipartisan immigration bill negotiated by Democratic and Republican senators, arguing that the former president prefers to reap political benefits rather than help the country. “Everything indicates that the bill won’t even advance in the Senate. Why? For one simple reason: Donald Trump. He believes it’s politically harmful to him, so he doesn’t support it, even if it benefits the country. He’ I’d rather use this issue as a weapon than resolve it,” Biden said.

Biden’s statements are among the harshest he has made against Trump, especially from the White House. When he criticizes Trump in this way, he usually does so at campaign rallies and in reference to the presidential elections in November, where both could face each other again. Biden reproached Trump for calling members of his party, the Republicans, to “intimidate” them and make them vote against the bill.

Avoiding Political Games

“It seems they’re giving in,” acknowledged Biden, who then urged Republican opposition members to show “courage” and “determination” by voting for what they believe is right, instead of succumbing to Trump’s pressures, who has great influence over the party’s base. Biden urged Republicans to move beyond “this toxic politics” and stop “playing political games” to respond to the American people’s requests for a solution to the immigration system, which has remained largely unchanged for decades.

“The Republicans must make it clear who they serve. Donald Trump or the American people? People want us to solve problems, not turn them into political issues. Whom do they serve? I know my answer,” Biden said. A group of Democratic and Republican senators released the text of a bill valued at $118 billion that links aid to Israel and Ukraine to the approval of immigration restrictions, something Republicans have been advocating for months.

Procedural Vote

It is expected that the Senate, dominated by Democrats, will hold a procedural vote. If the bill passes this step and is then approved by the full Senate, it will move to the House of Representatives, where it has little chance of success because Republicans have a majority and have already expressed opposition to the initiative. Immigration has become one of Biden’s major vulnerabilities, with images of chaos at the border affecting his approval ratings, currently at 39%.

Meanwhile, Trump, who entered the White House in 2016 promising to build a wall on the border with Mexico, is focusing most of his rallies on immigration and has made it clear that he plans to use this issue against Biden.
