Becky Hogan aspires to be elected as the new councilor in the city of Aurora next November. Hogan submitted her name as a citywide candidate, or “at large” candidate. “It’s about listening to the needs of our community not thinking that one size fits all and recognizing that our community itself has different voices and that we need to hear them all,” said Hogan.

The candidate continued, “The challenge is to be able to appreciate the city as a whole and recognize that there are different needs for the different sectors that make it up. For example, ward No. 1 is the oldest area currently being remodeled alongside the Anschutz Medical Campus. The landscape of this city is growing very rapidly and some of the existing neighborhoods are changing. It’s important that people in these neighborhoods benefit from that growth.”

Tools to Succeed

Hogan believes that she is very well prepared to join the Aurora City Council. “I have almost 30 years in economic development, which means that I understand how to bring, grow, and retain jobs. We must focus on education and acquire resources to maintain our infrastructure. Last but not least, we must be able to count on a police force to keep the community safe.”

She thinks Aurora is a city of opportunity. “We’re a large city, the third largest in the state of Colorado. We are no longer a commuter town, and we will one day be the largest city in Colorado because we have the opportunity, land, and water to grow,” she stated.

Defender of Diversity

This candidate describes herself as an advocate for diversity. She values that Aurora is one of the most diverse cities in the US due to its large number of refugees and immigrants. “I myself am an immigrant. I came from Korea when I was very young. I was adopted by American parents and became a citizen at 4 years old. Even though my parents and my entire adoptive family were Caucasian, they accepted me as I am. I have learned that the concept of family transcends biological realities,” she said.

Hogan left a message for the immigrants. “It doesn’t matter what color you are. It doesn’t matter what culture you will be categorized as. You will be respected for who you are. You’re a part of this family, and I want immigrants to feel that the second they step foot in Aurora that they are a family and have a responsibility to attend to it. This responsibility means that they will take care of their brothers and sisters. In return, their brothers and sisters will care for them back.”

Former First Lady

Beckey is the widow of Steve Hogan, Mayor of Aurora between January 2012 and May 2018. “I would be delighted to be able to join the Aurora City Council to help integrate this city as one.” The candidate revealed that when in the mood for Mexican food, she goes to “La Cueva” in Colfax. “Alfonso Núñez is the owner of that restaurant, and he is an outstanding chef. Now his children are in charge and continue to prepare great food. I go there to be delighted by the wonderful tastes,” she concluded.
