The I-70 Redevelopment Project is successfully coming to an end. “Until today we have already executed 80 percent of all the works contemplated by the central 70 projects. The works were carried out on time without major inconveniences. Our work schedule was not interrupted during the pandemic,” reported Elizabeth Suárez, CDOT Spanish spokesperson for the central 70 projects, the largest road project currently in Colorado.

Suárez explained that most of the remaining 20 percent of the work will be completed this year. “We refer to the commissioning of an express lane that will be very useful for all users and in particular for those who live in the area,” says the spokeswoman. The technology related to this express lane is being installed and for this reason users have seen changes in circulation since Wednesday, March 16.

Eastbound canals

The second important work of the project will be completed over the summer. “We continue to advance in the construction of the canals heading east. These two channels descend and pass under the structure where the park is built”, explains Suárez. By bringing the eastbound canals into service, I-70 will have twelve total canals available to users, six in each direction, including express canals.

A small but significant portion of the work will be completed the following year. “The only thing we’re going to finish in early 2023 is the park next to Swansea Elementary School,” she said. This is an important part of the project because it connects the two neighborhoods, Swansea and Globeville, which for decades were separated by the natural barrier of the viaduct.
