In Colorado, there are currently more than 328,000 detected cases of COVID-19 and more than 4,639 deaths, according to data form the Colorado Department of Health (CDPHE).
The first case in the United States of the new British strain of COVID-19 has been detected in Colorado. The patient infected with it is a man in his 20’s who had not traveled anywhere recently. The young man, whose identity was not disclosed, is in quarantine in Elber County near the city of Denver. Health authorities are investigating the case and conducting interviews to identify people with whom he may have been in contact with.
“There is much we don’t know about this new variant of COVID-19, but scientists in the UK have warned that it is significantly more contagious. The health and safety of Coloradans is our highest priority, and we will work to closely monitor it. We are working to prevent the spread of the virus at all levels,” said Jared Polis, governor of Colorado, confirming the discovery of this new strain.
The presence of this new variant was confirmed by Colorado state laboratories, which sent a notification to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This month, the British Government announced that it had detected a new strain of COVID-19 that appears to be 70 percent more contagious than other variations and could be linked to the increase of infections that have been recorded in London and the south-east of England since the middle of November.
Stabilization of Hospitalizations
The new variant has been detected in several countries around the world, and a week ago, chief US epidemiologist, Anthony Fauci, warned that this new variant could already be in the United States. The detection of the first case of the British strain coincides with a stabilization of hospitalizations in Colorado, which registers 18,230 patients admitted for COVID, of which 38 are in intensive care units, according to the CDPHE.
