CDPHE reports that as of December 17, the fourth day of vaccination, different health providers have administered 7,441 vaccinations in Colorado.

Vaccination against COVID-19 has started in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has worked closely with local health agencies across the state to get vaccines into health care facilities. The medical personnel of these health centers will be the first people to receive the vaccines. Residents and people in long-term care facilities are also to be vaccinated as a priority.

Colorado received the first shipment of about 8,000 vaccines made by the Pfizer company. By the third week of December, the state will receive another shipment of 12,000. Weekly shipments will arrive in Colorado until a total amount of 46,000 vaccines are completed. These vaccines will require special storage and monitoring. They must be preserved in ultra cold rooms at -80 degrees Celsius. Colorado purchased 10 units of ultra-cold cameras and distributed them throughout the state.

Waiting for the Moderna Vaccine

95,600 doses of Moderna’s vaccine will also reach the state. The federal government is expected to deliver a first shipment of Moderna vaccines to Colorado within hours of final approval by the FDA on the third weekend of December. Moderna vaccines do not need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures, which allows them to be distributed even further, especially to rural areas. The CDPHE assures that Colorado has requested enough vaccines to be able to provide for all inhabitants.

To be as fair and efficient in regards to distribution, the state has developed a phased plan for distribution of the vaccine with the goal of saving lives and ending the crisis that brought this pandemic as soon as possible. The first phase of vaccination, which includes healthcare workers in prolonged contact with COVID-19 patients will run through the winter. Then, around spring, vaccinations will be extended to the essential workers that the public serves. The rest of the population will be inoculated in the summer.

It is estimated that 10,000 people in the state will be vaccinated in the first week. If this vaccination trend continues, at the end of December 2020, about 30 thousand people will be vaccinated in Colorado.
