The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) issued a strong statement condemning the religious insults and offensive language shouted by some fans during the game between the CU Buffaloes and the BYU Cougars, held Saturday at Folsom Field. In their official statement, Chancellor Justin Schwartz and Athletic Director Rick George described the behavior as “deeply disappointing” and contrary to the institution’s values of respect, inclusion, and integrity. “Attending athletic events at CU Boulder is a privilege. We have a strict policy regarding abusive behavior, and those who engage in such conduct will be held accountable,” the statement said.

The offensive chants were directed at players and fans of Brigham Young University (BYU), an educational institution affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church. Although no physical altercations occurred, security personnel intervened in the stands to calm the situation and prevent escalation. The university reiterated its commitment to ensuring that everyone—students, faculty, visitors, and rival fans—feels safe and welcome on campus. “Discriminatory language and hostile behavior have no place at our sporting events or anywhere at CU Boulder,” the statement added.

Hours Before Shooting at Mormon Church in Michigan

This incident occurred just hours before a shooting at a temple of the same denomination, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The shooting and subsequent fire at the Mormon temple in Grand Blanc left five people dead, including the attacker, who was identified as a former Navy officer. The FBI has classified the event as an “act of targeted violence,” prompting calls for peace and tolerance across the country.

Although there was no physical violence in Boulder, the university’s call aims to prevent hostile speech in stadiums from becoming a trigger for more serious conflicts. “We appreciate the majority of our fans who support our teams with enthusiasm and respect,” the statement concluded, inviting the community to keep sporting events as spaces of pride and unity.
