During his visit to Colorado, the Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United States, Xavier Becerra, highlighted the achievements since the launch of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a national mental health support hotline. Becerra emphasized the crucial role of the support provided by Congress in ensuring the necessary resources for this important service.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to individuals experiencing a crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States. “Since its implementation, this hotline has been shown to save lives and provide a vital resource for those facing mental health challenges,” said Becerra. 

The high-ranking official highlighted the importance of having an accessible resource like 988, which allows individuals to communicate in moments of mental health emergencies without the need to worry about calling 911. Additionally, he underscored the commitment of the president and the government in general to support this initiative, recognizing its positive impact on society.

Caraveo’s bill proposal

Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo also participated in the conversation, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental health issues in Latino communities and adapting 988 services to meet the specific needs of different groups. Congresswoman Caraveo introduced a bill that would extend mental health services and access to 988 to agricultural workers.
