There is no better way to celebrate the beautiful tradition of the Day of the Dead than to be captivated by the enormous artistic pieces that make up the “Skulls in My City” exhibition. Now in its third year, this traveling exhibit now features nine giant skulls decorated by Colorado-based artists. The Beauty of Skulls Comes to Downtown Denver.

“This exhibition allows us to honor everything that the celebration of the Day of the Dead means. We are promoting Hispanic cultural traditions and at the same time giving a boost and projection to the talented artists of Hispanic origin who have created true pieces of art with each skull,” said Alexis Newton, creator and leader of the beautiful exhibition.

Pieces from the “Skulls in My City” show can be seen on the second floor of Denver Performing Art’s Buell Theater in downtown Denver. In mid-October, these skulls could be seen inside the Broncos stadium on the “Broncos en español” event. “The purpose is that the entire public can enjoy these pieces,” said Newton.

NINTH SKULL | The artist Charlo García made a beautiful work in black and white.

Charlo García, born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, joined the group of artists participating in the “Skulls in My City” exhibition. García bases his artistic style on imagination, exploration, and discovery. His work is in black and white because of his love of simplicity and because his art is already complex, and detail based.

“I am very pleased to be able to represent my culture through such an important project and it fills me with pride to be able to put my art in something as symbolic as a skull and allow it to be in different places in the city,” García said about this opportunity. The artist continues to share his testimony about the meaning of this celebration in his life.

“Since I was little, my mother instilled in me the importance of the Day of the Dead. Although we lived in the north of Mexico, my mom would set up an altar for our grandmother. We would gather around the house and say a prayer while candles were lit for Grandma. In my piece I have added a detail for my grandmother. I hope they find it, he concluded.
