TheDream.US, a program to facilitate entering university for young immigrants, is about to close its application period for the academic year 2021-2022. Young people who are DACA recipients may apply for the scholarship. On this occasion, the criteria for eligibility was expanded, and TPS beneficiaries as well as young people without immigration status who arrived before November 1, 2015 will also be able to apply. These young people must meet all the DACA eligibility criteria.
In recent years, TheDream.US has awarded 273 scholarships worth nearly 3.93 million to Colorado dreamers. The program has consolidated its partnership with the Metropolitan State University (MSU-Denver) and the Community College of Denver (CCD), both institutions dedicated to supporting the higher education needs of young people with DACA. The deadline for scholarship applications is February 25, 2021. “Now is the time for dreamers to go to college,” said Candy Marshall, president of TheDream.US.
To take a 4-year program
She continues, “With DACA solidly in place and the potential for legislation that provides dreamers with permanent residency, a college education is key to pursuing a meaningful career that will help young immigrants contribute to the future of our country. We thank MSU-Denver and CCD for helping immigrant youth have the opportunity to pursue their career and higher education dreams.” The scholarship awards up to $37,000 toward a four-year college program.
Janine Davidson, MSU-Denver president, recalled that the university she leads has a commitment to immigrant youth. “We are one of the first universities in the country to offer state tuition to these students, we continue to look for ways to ensure that students have access to education. Our partnership with TheDream.US is a key part of that strategy; the scholarships they offer are critical to keeping students in college,” Davidson said.
A Student Speaks
According to Gabriel, a first year TheDream.US fellow attending MSU-Denver, “TheDream.US has completely changed my life. I always wanted to go to university, I have always liked to learn, but there was an economic barrier that prevented me from doing so. Thanks to this scholarship fund, I am now studying math and science at university, and I hope to one day get my PhD. I know that knowledge is power, it is something that no one can take away from me, and I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to earn my degree. ”
