A Republican activist and street artist, known as Sabo, has admitted responsibility for the racist signs that recently appeared at several bus stops along Colfax Avenue in Denver. These signs, which included messages such as “Kamala’s Illegals” and “Blacks Must Sit at the Back of the Bus. Kamala’s Migrants Sit in the Front,” were discovered early Thursday morning by drivers from the Regional Transportation District (RTD).

Sabo, who had previously installed similar signs during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, stated on his Facebook page that he placed these signs in response to reports about supposed Venezuelan gang activity at an apartment complex in Aurora. Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and arrest those responsible for putting up the signs.

Thomas also noted that, while specific charges will be determined by the district attorney, these actions could be classified as bias-motivated crimes. Reactions to these incidents have been strong. Denver City Councilwoman Serena Gonzalez Gutierrez expressed her outrage, stating, “Our Black and Latino communities will not be divided. We will stand united in our fight for freedom and justice.”

No place for hate

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser emphasized that “there is no place for hate in Colorado” and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to justice and equality for all.  Finally, well-known immigrant community activist Janet Vizguerra shared her testimony of resilience in the face of the hate attacks she has encountered throughout her struggle. “These attacks strengthen me, and I know we are not alone. We see our community standing together, defending our rights,” Vizguerra declared.
