María Lorena Ramírez Nahueachi, known as the “Tarahumara Marathoner,” a Mexican endurance runner who has gained international recognition for her impressive feats in the world of ultramarathon running, will participate in the Latino Ultra Nature Adventure (LUNA) in Boulder this coming Sunday, October 22. Lorena became famous for her victory in the Ultra Trail Cerro Rojo race in 2017.

The athlete defeated competitors from all over the world, running barefoot and dressed in traditional Rarámuri attire. In addition to her triumphs in ultramarathon races, Lorena was also honored by Netflix with the documentary “Lorena, the light-footed one.” Her unique running style and incredible story will capture attention upon her arrival in Boulder. However, Lorena’s presence should not intimidate less experienced runners.

Run and walk in the forest

LUNA is designed for several levels. The first is the Ultra level, 55km (32 miles), which is surely what Lorena will run, as a high-performance athlete. Those interested in practicing physical activity, even if they have never run, can register to run the Half Marathon (13.1 miles); 13 kilometers (10 miles); or 5 kilometers (3 miles). “It’s not about competing. What we want is for people to enjoy nature, walk, run when they want, jog when they feel like it,” said Irene Vilar, director of Americas for Conservation and the Arts, co-founder of LUNA.

“LUNA is an adventure in nature designed in such a way that you can take on a challenge. For athletes, it will be competing. For the rest of those who participate, the experience will be enjoying the forest in the company of family and friends. Not many people know that the forest is pure, accessible, and free medicine. Science has proven that, in less than 20 minutes in the forest, the body begins to regenerate. Lower the pressure. Calm down. Lymphocyte cells (natural killer cells) are stimulated, which help raise your immune system and protect you,” said Vilar.

For the entire family

Vilar continued, “Professional athletes are invited because this is the first time in 35 years that Boulder County, which has some of the most beautiful public lands in the Colorado area, has granted such a permit for an event. So we’re going to have access to some incredible trails. And for professional athletes, I don’t think there are many Ultra racing opportunities anchored in the woods.” “We also want families to register. LUNA is an adventure with elements of sport that will unite us with our loved ones,” Vilar concluded.

XIII ALEF

The Américas Latino Eco Festival (ALEF) will begin with LUNA. ALEF is an emblematic festival that has been carried out by Americas for Conservation and the Arts for more than a decade. In 2023, the thirteenth edition of the ALEF will be held. “On this occasion we will be starting the ALEF 2023 activities in the forest with LUNA. And we will end the festival on December 10, also in the forest. We are going to cut down pine trees that can be taken home as a Christmas Tree for free. With this activity we are preserving the forest and avoiding the consequences of forest fires,” explains Vilar.
