In the majestic setting of the Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Performing Art Complex, the Colorado Latino Leadership Advocacy and Research Organization (CLLARO) celebrated its 28th Annual Bernie Valdez Award Presentation. This event honors and recognizes the outstanding contributions of exceptional individuals in the Colorado community. This prestigious award is named after Bernie Valdez, a staunch advocate for civil rights and an influential figure in the fight for social justice in Colorado.
This year’s awardees are true role models for the new generations and represent a diversity of fields and efforts in the community. From education to politics, from social justice to executive leadership of nonprofit organizations, these individuals have left an indelible mark on Colorado. Mario Carrera, President and CEO of CLLARO, emphasized the importance of recognizing and thanking the awardees for their tireless work in various aspects of the community.
“The presentation of these awards not only celebrates individual achievements but also underscores the importance of continuing to work together to build an inclusive and just community in Colorado. These awardees are an inspiration to all of us and a reminder of the ability to effect positive change when we come together for a common goal,” Carrera highlighted.

The Awardees
This year’s awardees include Juanita Martínez Rocha, educator; Julie Gonzales, local Senator; Luis Torres, educator and university authority; Denise S. Maes, lawyer and federal government official; Andrea Colmenero, nonprofit sector executive; Debbie Ortega, Denver councilwoman for 25 years; and the nonprofit organization CULTIVANDO. Their achievements and commitment reflect the spirit of Bernie Valdez and his legacy of fighting for equality and justice in Colorado.
