COLORADO REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES
Redacción El Comercio de Colorado
The race to define the Republican candidate who will seek the Colorado governorship remains in absolute suspense, showing an extremely tight panorama between the two main contenders. With 93% of the estimated votes already counted, the balance very narrowly favors Victor Marx, who leads Barb Kirkmeyer by a margin of just 2,181 votes.
On a mathematical level, Marx’s current advantage represents 1.08%, which temporarily places the contest outside the 0.5% threshold required by Colorado election law to trigger an automatic vote recount. Given this scenario, the campaign of former lawmaker Kirkmeyer has opted for caution: so far she has neither conceded victory to her rival nor formalized a request for a recount funded by her own campaign.
The ballot cure process under the microscope
With such a tight margin on the scoreboard, the attention of both political camps has shifted to the crucial process of signature correction, known as “ballot cure.” Election authorities in different counties are currently processing those ballots that were set aside due to inconsistencies or missing signatures by voters.
In an election being fought vote by vote, the efforts of activists to contact electors so they can rectify their ballots before legal deadlines become decisive, as these last-minute corrections could alter the final figures in favor of either candidate.
Marked division in election geography
The vote distribution map exposes a notable territorial division in the Republican party’s support bases across the state. On one hand, Barb Kirkmeyer has consolidated her leadership mainly in the Denver metropolitan area and in the more urbanized sectors of northern Colorado, successfully capturing the vote in high-density residential areas.
On the other hand, Victor Marx grounds his hold on first place thanks to massive support from communities in southern Colorado and the rural periphery. Marx dominates the counties with the largest territorial extension but lower density, where the traditional conservative vote turned out in force at the ballot box.
The outcome of this primary remains wide open. While Marx retains a razor-thin lead in the overall count, the final trickle of cured ballots will determine whether the trend is reversible or if his nomination will be certified ahead of the November general elections.
