The event “Latinas Leaders and Entrepreneurs” reaches its fifth edition. “We took the initiative of this event to celebrate and honor the women of the Hispanic community within the framework of International Women’s Day. It is the contribution that the Hispanic community makes within the programming of the Colorado Women’s Week. At our event we speak Spanish, and we highlight the contributions of women in our community,” said Alexis Newton, founder and promoter of this initiative. “Latinas Leaders and Entrepreneurs” reaches its fifth edition.

Rocío Durán, who together with Newton has led this event, emphasizes the impact they have had in its different editions. “I believe without a doubt that we have contributed to giving greater visibility to the achievements of Hispanic women. Before, by not having an event to see ourselves, we were not considered to celebrate Women’s Day. We have created our own space to tell in our language what we have advanced. Our contribution has been to help inspire and motivate many women,” said Durán.

Launching ideas and rewarding the leaders

Newton and Durán with that vision in mind introduced several novelties to the fifth edition of their event. Entrepreneurs, with businesses established less than a year ago that have an income of no more than 30 thousand dollars, will be able to present their business vision to successful businesswomen in the community. Those who obtain the best performance in the “Pitch, launch your idea!” are going to get cash prizes as a stimulus to boost their fledgling ventures.

On the other hand, Newton and Durán have the goal of rewarding an outstanding community leader. Any organization or person can nominate women who have made contributions in different areas and impacted positively the Hispanic community. Newton and Duran hope that an application review committee identifies women who have a special commitment to the work they do. They look for everyday heroes who do their job every day without seeking recognition.

Funds for educational scholarships

“The funds that are collected for the tickets to the event will be assigned to the Latina First Foundation to grant scholarships to young people at different levels of education. These are funds that will go back to the community to create a big impact,” Newton said.  A group of women will be offering their products and services in this event.
