Following the arrest of 14 suspects involved in a violent assault and kidnapping at the The Edge at Lowry apartment complex in Aurora, Tom Homan, designated as the next “border czar” by President-elect Donald Trump, urged Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain to hand over the detainees to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation.
“The only thing missing from the press conference [Chamberlain] held was an ICE agent standing next to him at the podium. We’ll handle the immigration process, but local law enforcement must fulfill their role of protecting their communities,” Homan said in an interview with Fox News. He added that turning over these individuals would guarantee local public safety as well as national security.
The incident in Aurora, which Chamberlain described as “without question gang activity,” involves possible suspects linked to Tren de Aragua (TdA), a dangerous transnational organization sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in July of this year. Federal authorities hold TdA responsible for crimes such as human trafficking, gender-based violence, money laundering, and drug trafficking.
A Direct Message to Aurora
Homan praised the efforts of the local police but emphasized the need for collaboration with ICE to ensure the removal of foreign criminals. “Let’s talk and work together. Loving your community should be more important than political rejection of Trump,” Homan stated firmly.
The former acting director of ICE added that if local law enforcement fails to turn over the suspects to immigration authorities, his team will act starting January 21, the day the new administration begins.
Chamberlain’s Approach
For his part, Chamberlain has reiterated his commitment to safety in Aurora and his focus on identifying and arresting individuals responsible for victimizing the community, regardless of their immigration status. The investigation into the case remains ongoing in coordination with federal authorities.
