Gabe Evans Virtual Winner in Colorado’s 8th District

THE CANDIDATE’S VICTORY GIVES THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ITS 213TH SEAT IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, PUTTING IT FOUR SEATS AWAY FROM OBTAINING THE MAJORITY.

Gabe Evans, the Republican candidate, is the virtual winner in the contested race for the 8th District seat in Colorado, after receiving 48.98% of the votes (162,002) compared to his Democratic opponent, Yadira Caraveo, who garnered 48.20% (159,426). The difference of 2,576 votes between them does not meet the requirements for a mandatory recount, nor is it expected that the ballots in the “curing” process or the overseas military votes will alter the final result.

The surprising decision by Adams County to resume the vote count and complete it in the early hours of Saturday, November 9, proved crucial in closing this race. Despite 40% of Adams County’s population being Hispanic and voting mostly for Caraveo, the margin was not enough to secure her re-election in District 8. Meanwhile, the counties of Weld and Larimer gave their majority support to Evans.

As a result, Colorado’s congressional delegation is balanced with four representatives from each party. Democrats Diana DeGette, Joe Neguse, Jason Crow, and Brittany Pettersen were re-elected in districts 1, 2, 6, and 7, respectively. On the other hand, Republicans have secured victories in districts 3, 4, and 5, with Jeff Hurd, Lauren Boebert, and Jeff Crank winning their respective races. Representative Boebert faced no obstacles in securing her win in a new congressional district.

National Impact of the Result

Evans’s victory also represents a key addition for Republicans in the House of Representatives. The Republican Party now holds 213 seats compared to the Democrats’ 204. The results of 18 seats are still pending. With four more wins in addition to Evans’s, Republicans would also gain the majority in the House of Representatives. The Republican Party has already taken control of the Senate with 52 seats compared to the Democrats’ 46.
