The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has officially announced that Denver has been selected to host the league’s 16th team, set to debut in the 2026 season. This decision marks a milestone in the history of women’s sports in the United States, as the Denver investor group has paid a record expansion fee of $110 million, the highest in NWSL history and in any women’s sports league in the country.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston celebrated the announcement, highlighting that despite being home to great athletes and passionate fans, the city had never had its own professional women’s soccer team. “That changes today. We are proud to announce that professional women’s soccer is coming to Denver, and generations of fans will now be able to cheer on the nation’s top players right in their own city,” said Johnston.
An Ambitious Project
The new NWSL team in Denver will be led by an investment group headed by Rob Cohen, President and CEO of IMA Financial Group, and will be supported by influential figures in sports and finance, including Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments and co-owner of the Denver Broncos.
The franchise is currently finalizing plans for its home stadium. Initially, the team will play in a temporary venue while a purpose-built soccer stadium is constructed. The team name, colors, and crest will be announced at a later date.
A Growing Market
Denver’s expansion comes at a time when women’s soccer continues to gain popularity and relevance in the United States. The NWSL, which recently added teams in Utah, San Francisco, and Boston, aims to strengthen its presence in cities with a strong fan base and a thriving sports ecosystem.
The league has experienced unprecedented growth in terms of investment, viewership, and sponsorships, with multi-million-dollar broadcasting deals and an increasing international presence.
