The City and County of Denver are offering emergency shelter positions for migrants arriving from Central and South America. These are part-time jobs and to be performed at variable hours. These workers would have assignments of between 24 and 30 hours each week. The city statement indicates that it is recommended that people applying for employment be bilingual. Denver offers work for helpers in migrant shelters.
At the same time, the city requires volunteers to provide medical care in the shelters. These volunteers must undergo a background check to be eligible. There are also other non-healthcare volunteer opportunities as well. As of December 20th, the city reports that some 470 migrants are in the city’s emergency shelters and another 192 are in homeless shelters.
Access to FEMA resources
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock declared an emergency in order to apply for financial assistance from various federal funding sources such as FEMA. “The declaration is a tool to help the increasing number of migrants coming to Denver, particularly as winter arrives,” Hancock said. City spokespersons revealed that the city has already spent more than a million dollars to serve migrants. From December 9 to December 20th, more than 1,300 people from Central and South America have reached Denver.
