Children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old are already receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Hospitals, pediatric practices, and pharmacies are using Pfizer and Moderna, the only two vaccines currently authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for minors. Pfizer’s vaccine consists of two basic doses and a third booster. Meanwhile, Moderna has two doses.
While the FDA approved the use of these vaccines for young children in cases of emergency, the CDC approval was the last hurdle pending so that this age group could access vaccines. The United States is the first country to protect the youngest against covid-19. The federal government has been planning the approval of vaccines for this population for several months.
They invite minors to get vaccinated
According to the CDC, children five and under represent about 20 million children in the United States. “Many parents have been waiting for this day. We know from scientific data that the vaccines available in the US can be safely and effectively applied to children under 5 years of age,” said Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC. Walensky asked families to have their children vaccinated.
So far, only 35 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 11, the last group to be authorized to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, have received at least one dose of the vaccine. 66.8 percent of Americans have completed their vaccination schedule, and 47.2 percent of them have received a booster dose. The country accumulates the highest absolute number of infections and deaths from the pandemic.
CVS and Walgreens accepting appointments
CVS and Walgreens staff are already vaccinating American children. “We are giving Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine to eligible children aged 18 months to four years at our 1,100 MinuteClinic locations,” CVS Pharmacy announced. For its part, Walgreens announced that it will have vaccination appointments available starting June 25.
